City of Hayward officials announced on Aug. 21 that they will permanently close their main public library on Sept. 1 and open a new one in late October.
Hayward officials said the reason they’re closing their old main library at the close of business on Sept. 1 is so they can begin the transition into and preparation for the new library, which also will be used as a community learning center.
The grand opening of the new library will take place on Oct. 27, starting with a dedication ceremony at 11 a.m. and followed by an all-day community celebration, including tours and other activities and entertainment for all ages.
During the eight weeks that the main library is closed, the Weekes Branch Library at 27300 Patrick Ave. will remain open for business as usual.
Also during the closure period, library book and materials checkout periods will be extended and late-fine accruals will be suspended.
Throughout the closure, library materials can continue to be returned in the book boxes located outside the old main library on Watkins Street between C and D Streets.
