BARCELONA—Just two days before the start of 2009, three physically disabled Spaniards initiated a 250 kilometer trek across Antarctica. It is the first expedition of its kind in the freezing continent.

Apart from the aide of two experienced guides and the support of their loved ones via satellite, the men chose not to receive outside assistance on their journey.

Although they lack experience in this sort of adventure, the three are athletes had prepared for the expedition for two years, in Greenland and Norway.

In an interview with the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, one of them commented on the meaning of the expedition: “What I would truly like is for people to learn to foster the abilities of others as opposed to their disabilities.”
