A gunman opened fire at a cinema in Germany, according to reports on Thursday.

An unidentified man opened fire at a cinema complex near Frankfurt, Germany, in Viernheimy, German newspaper Bild is reporting.

According to German media, Interior Ministrer Peter Beuth said that the gunman was shot and killed by police.

At least 20 people were reportedly injured—many apparently as the result of tear gas in a confined space.

The masked gunman entered the cinema and opened fire four times.

A local newspaper, Darmstadter Echo, reported that the man apparently barricaded himself inside. The man is said to be wearing a belt with ammunition, German newspaper Bild reported.

Dozens of screaming customers were seen fleeing from the cinema. German police also implemented a media blackout.
