Ozzie Guillen is out as manager of the Marlins after just one season in Miami, in which the team went just 69-93, according to a report on MLB’s website.
“After careful consideration following the disappointment of the 2012 season, we decided to dismiss Ozzie,” president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest said. “Our managerial search begins immediately, and our hope is that a new manager, along with roster improvements, will restore a winning culture.”
The Marlins had high expectations in 2012 after shelling out a combined $191 million in offseason free agent deals that landed them Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle, and Heath Bell. At the end of May, Miami was 29-22 but went just 40-71 the rest of the way and were sellers at the trade deadline.
The 48-year-old Guillen is still owed $7.5 million over the next three years—the richest managerial deal in team history.
