The wife of disgraced communist party boss, Bo Xilai, faced trial in China starting Aug. 9 for the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood.
Gu Kailai entered the heavily guarded building at Hefei City Intermediate People’s Court at around 6 a.m. in a convoy of black cars that drove into the underground garage. Reporters also saw two people enter the court, believed to be the staff of the British Embassy in Beijing.
Gu’s trial is considered the most sensational one in China since Mao Zedong’s wife Jiang Qing was put on trial as part of the infamous Gang of Four 30 years ago.
Reporters from all over the world filled the area outside the court building. The court has banned reporters from the courtroom, claiming the public gallery is already full.
It is reported that the court suspended all other cases Thursday and staff not involved in the trial will have the day off.
A group of Bo Xilai’s supporters gathered at the court entrance, according to a Radio France International report. They claimed to media that their request to attend the trial was rejected.
According to a report from Singapore’s Zao Bao, the court will issue a briefing about the trial at 1:30 p.m. local time.
