Greg Sims, a teacher with Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs, Florida, was suspended for taping a student’s hands in class.

Sims, a science teacher and athletic trainer, received a five-day suspension without pay, reads a letter from school Superintendent Walt Griffin, according to WKMG-TV.

Students told the station they saw him tape up a disruptive female student during class.

Officials with the school district said he taped up her hands and then taped up her mouth. The student’s book bag was then taped to a pole.

The parents of students who attend Lake Brantley High School told WKMG they were surprised.

“I don’t think anything could really warrant that,” Sue Parker, a parent, was quoted as saying.

His suspension was handed down on Tuesday.

The district said he was suspended in 2001 for embarrassing students and undisclosed misconduct. He was also warned after he used a derogatory slur to describe a student.
