NEW YORK—This year, more than any other, “green” is the theme at the 2010 New York International Auto Show debuting this weekend. The show runs from April 2 through April 11.

The Lincoln MKZ hybrid, the Volkswagen Toureg Hybrid, the Lexus CT 200H, the Nissan LEAF, and believe it or not, Porsche, had green energy efficient cars on display. Yes, the German automaker that put the “p” in performance, is preparing to roll out a hybrid version of its performance SUV, the Cayenne S.

And while some speculate that the green move by most automakers is more fad than fact, the end result is cleaner technology and higher miles per gallon year after year—a trend that was seen as a far off fantasy a decade ago.

“The green shifts happening in the auto sector are concrete—they are happening, and at lightning speed,” said John Wiebe, the CEO of GLOBE Foundation, at a conference in March. The GLOBE Foundation is Vancouver-based organization that seeks to help business solve ecological problems and promote clean technology.

GM Europe President Carl Peter Foster emphasized the government’s role in helping to guide auto manufacturers toward the use of green technology within the automotive industry.

“Its success in the market will be equally dependent on governments ... putting in place comprehensive policy frameworks that send complementary signals to electricity providers and consumers,” Forster said at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show.
