NEW YORK—In celebration of 40th Earth Day, Miss America 2010 Caressa Cameron held a green rally at Time Square on Thursday. Cameron was supporting the Great American Cleanup program, which consists of millions of volunteers who clean up public spaces throughout the country.
Other headliners at the event included U.N. head Ban Ki-moon, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and actor Matthew Modine.
“Every day should be Earth Day. We should make our steps to conserve our Earth and conserve energy and whatever we can do to make sure that this is a better place for the generations that come,” Cameron said.
Keep America Beautiful, established in 1953, is the nation’s largest volunteer-based community action and education organization. Its signature program, the Great American Cleanup, is one of its many initiatives that bring together volunteers who care about the environment.
As part of the program, from March through May of this year, an estimated 3 million volunteers are holding litter and debris cleanups on public lands and waterways, hosting recycling drives, sprucing up community parks and playgrounds, removing graffiti, planting trees and community gardens and hosting activities designed to improve the living environments around residential areas.
“I’m here hopefully to use my influence as Miss America to show people that this is something that’s easy—Earth conservation is something that we are responsible for, something that we can do every day,” Cameron said.
During the event, the retired New York Police Department detective Elbin Mena received the President’s Volunteer Service Award in recognition of his commitment in cleaning and greening the city neighborhoods.
