NEW YORK—As Memorial Day Weekend and the unofficial start of summer near, Governors Island has announced its 2013 season schedule. The focus this year will be on the island’s historic district because the southern area still has some ongoing construction projects.

Visitors coming from Manhattan and Brooklyn can reach Governors Island by ferry as usual during the open times of Saturday, Sunday and holiday Monday. It is allowed to bring your own food, but there will also be vendors on the island selling food, which will remain open through September 29.

Some of the programming for 2013 includes photography exhibits, an outdoor reading room, children’s programs, and Bike New York classes for brushing up on biking skills.

In July, the 2013 season will reach its height with the French festival of vintage carnival rides and carousels in Nolan Park.

Other highlights of the music scene over the summer will include the Jazz Age Lawn Party, mini-golf, and the unicycle festival.
