Google’s foray into the world of laptops and netbooks has begun. The Chromebook—a small, slim, and compact laptop optimized for basic use and browsing the internet—is now available for pre-order online.

The Chromebook has been branded as Google’s solution to the heavy duty high-powered super-clutter computers of the modern day.

And for those who aren’t looking to purchase the smaller more compact netbook or dig deep into their pockets for a Macbook Air, the Chromebook might just find a niche.

The design is very basic and based on low-key hardware to cater to the casual web surfer or user who needs a quick and mobile internet platform.

They operate on Google’s open source Chrome OS, which through its user interface essentially mirrors the Chrome internet browser.

Features of the Chromebook include an impressive 8-second boot time with instant resume, full Wi-Fi and 3G support on some models and optimization for web services, a free 100 megabyte per month mobile data plan from Verizon Wireless on 3G models, and fully integrated Cloud storage support.

Hardware on the laptop will include Intel’s Atom Dual-core Processor, an HD webcam, 2 USB 2.0 ports, 4-in-1 memory card slot, mini-VGA port on the Samsung version, HDMI port on the Acer version, full size Chrome keyboard, an oversize fully-clickable trackpad, and a 12.1 inch and 11.6 inch display respectively for the Samsung and Acer versions.

The Chromebook is moderately priced in the $400 range and designed to be a leader in the web-surfing , cloud computing laptop vertical, but the gap between memory in the physical and virtual in the yet to be fully established Cloud Computing world might leave skeptical buyers to hedge bets and go for something not completely based in the “clouds.”
