Eight years after its launch, Google Inc.’s Gmail e-mail service has topped 425 million active monthly users, the company announced at its annual I/O developer conference on Thursday.
The number exceeds the most recent estimate of Windows Live Hotmail’s users at 350 million as of October 2011 and the number of Yahoo! Mail’s users at 310 million as of October 2011 in a Comscore report.
“Hundreds of millions of users have gone Google,” Google announced.
Google cited that Gmail is being used by government agencies in 45 U.S. states, 66 of the top 100 universities in the United States, and over 5 million companies, including Roche and KLM.
Google I/O began in 2008 with 5,000 participants every year. The conference features highly technical, in-depth sessions focused on building Web, mobile, and enterprise applications with Google and open Web technologies including Chrome and Android.
