A jury in Italy sparked outrage on the Internet with a decision to convict three Google executives over a video showing a boy being bullied. The executives each received suspended six-month sentences.

The prosecutor claimed that the employees broke Italian law by allowing the posting of a video on the Google-owned YouTube Web site, in which four boys harassed a child with Down’s syndrome.

The Internet giant described the decision as astonishing, considering it a “serious threat to the Web in Italy.”

The case could create a precedent where the social media hosting platform could be prosecuted for the content its users uploaded, even if they remove illegal files once they are notified of their existence.

Google said in a statement that they will “vigorously appeal this decision.”
