The Golden State Warriors defeated the San Antonio Spurs in San Antonio—a place where the Warriors have lost 33 consecutive regular-season games prior—to join the ’95-96 Chicago Bulls as the only other team with 72 wins in a season.

After a 100-99 win against the Memphis Grizzles on April 9, Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors traveled to San Antonio to face a team that was going for history itself—zero losses at home, a feat no team has ever accomplished in NBA history.

The San Antonio Spurs led most of the way, but a strong second half by reigning MVP Curry propelled the Warriors to victory. Curry had 20 points in the second half and finished with a total of 37 points.

“They just exploded,” Spurs forward David West said. “Steph just took over the game. We weren’t able to get to him, keep bodies in front of him.”

However, it wasn’t a one man show. Shooting guard Klay Thompson added 14 points and defensive player Draymond Green finished with 11 on 4-for-5 shooting.

For the San Antonio Spurs, LaMarcus Aldridge had 24 points to lead all scorers for the Spurs. Reigning Defensive Player of the Year Kawhi Leonard added 20 points but shot 7-for-22 from the field.

As the seconds dwindled and victory was assured, Curry and Green embraced on the court, understanding what had just happened in San Antonio and the history books.

“That’s my guy. Me and Steph are really tight and to share that moment together is special because we know the amount of work that we put in and to come here and get that win meant a lot. Just had a moment,” said Green

Green had been extremely vocal about wanting to chase history, and not wanting to rest. It became a question of whether Coach Steve Kerr should rest his best players for the impending playoffs or to play them in San Antonio. The Warriors control the season series with 3-1.

It has been a history breaking season for Curry and the Golden State Warriors so far—first becoming the second team in NBA history to win 70 games in a season; Curry continued his streak of 3-pointers made in a regular-season games with his 151st; the Golden State Warriors have won the most road games in a season.

Now the team is just one game away from winning the most games in a season, 73 wins, when they take on the Memphis Grizzles on April 13.
