A school in Michigan used a green and efficient method to mow the lawn—by using goats.

The Detroit Enterprise Academy borrowed a herd of goats to clear the brush outside the school as part of its organic garden project.

Over 30 goats and sheep were let loose on a vacant lot adjacent to the school to clear out a field of overgrown weeds. The lot will then be used by the school for an organic vegetable garden.

“Our goal is to actually, next year, have a fully operating garden where we can provide parents and our families with food and/or sell food to the community,” principal Rodney Deal told WDIV.

The goats grazed in the lot for two days. According to the school, students will be ready to plant the garden by spring 2011.
