GM Cars: 100K GM Cars Recalled Due to Seatbelt Issues, GM Says

GM Cars: Nearly 100,000 GM cars—specifically, GM SUV cars, are being recalled for potential seat belt problems in GM cars.

Nearly 100,000 General Motors SUVs are being recalled by the Detroit automaker which said the cars’ seat belts could fail, according to the National Highway Transportation Security Administration (NHTSA).

The recall affects 97,843 GM cars, including the 2011 Cadillac SRX, Chevrolet Equinox, and GMC Terrain Vehicles.

The NHTSA and GM said that the driver’s and the front passenger’s seat belt buckle anchor could break, rendering it useless in a crash. The NHTSA warned on its website that the cars’ “safety belt system may not restrain the occupant(s) as designed and could increase the risk of injury.”

According to CNN, the seat belt issue was discovered during September tests done by General Motors. Two failures of the seat belt system during tests prompted the recall. Both incidents came from the driver’s side seat belt. The same system is used for the front passenger side as well.

The mass recall will start in mid-January, ABC News reported.
