October 15, 2013 Updated: July 18, 2015

Glenn Greenwald, who has became well-known after publishing documents leaked by Edward Snowden, will leave the Guardian and start his own news agency.

Greenwald said he is departing for a new, “once-in-a-career dream journalistic opportunity,” reported Buzzfeed.

“My partnership with the Guardian has been extremely fruitful and fulfilling: I have high regard for the editors and journalists with whom I worked and am incredibly proud of what we achieved,” Greenwald said in an emailed statement. “The decision to leave was not an easy one, but I was presented with a once-in-a-career dream journalistic opportunity that no journalist could possibly decline.”

The new opportunity, which includes financial backing, will be revealed “very shortly,” he said.

A Guardian spokeswoman said the Guardian and Greenwald are departing on good terms.
