Girl Feels ‘God' Telling Her to Go Out, Then She Hears Faint Cries Coming From Bushes

Elysia Laub lives with her family on a beautiful property in the 18000 block of White Oak Avenue in Lowell, Indiana. The girl was only 9 years old when she made headlines in the country. What did she do? She was hailed as a guardian angel for saving a tiny life.

It happened while Elysia was playing in her home. That particular Monday in July 2016, she was inside her home when she suddenly had a strong feeling urging her to go outside. Elysia said that at first she thought she was hearing voices in her head, according to various reports. However, the feeling to go outside just got stronger.

Elysia said that she remembered the biblical saying that “God moves in mysterious ways.” So, she went into her backyard and did not see or hear anything. She was just about to go back inside when suddenly, she heard strange faint-sounding “cries” coming from the bushes.

Elysia thought that one of her piglets had gotten out of the pen, so she went to investigate. Upon investigation, she made an amazing discovery in a rural area near a creek in her backyard just before 11 a.m., NBC Chicago reported.

The then-9-year-old Elysia followed the sound to the bushes. As she parted the leaves, she saw, to her utter amazement, a newborn baby! The amazed Elysia told the news outlet: “I just saw pink legs kicking away. I knew it was alive and I knew we had something. I could not second guess myself. I knew we had to get help.”

Shocked and horrified, Elysia went to get her mom, Heidi, who, at first, thought her daughter was daydreaming. But when Heidi saw the baby girl with her own eyes, she immediately picked her up.

Apparently, someone had given birth to this baby in their backyard. The newborn’s umbilical cord and placenta were still attached, and maggots were all over her naked body, but at least she was crying and still alive. Heidi told her daughter: “Elysia run to the house and call 911 as soon as possible.”

“I got to the house and we put one of our baby blankets around her,” said Heidi.

When police arrived shortly thereafter, they examined the infant’s condition. They stated that the baby girl could have been left alone for several hours to one day before Elysia found her. “It’s obvious that this child, from the medical reports, was born just a few hours before it was found,” said Sheriff John Buncich from the Indiana police department. “It could have been overnight.”

Temperatures reached near 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius) that day. Hence, the newborn baby’s skin was sunburned, but she was otherwise alright ... thanks to Elysia acting on her intuition.

“A miracle that [the 9-year-old] was out there to find her,” said Sheriff Buncich. Officers named the baby girl “Miracle Jane Doe,” and they called Elysia the infant’s ”guardian angel.”

“This is a miracle we found her. God put my daughter out there to save that baby. She is fine. This is really a good story,” Elysia’s mom said in an interview with WMAQ.

The infant was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital, where she was treated for sunburns. After that, the healthy baby girl was transferred to a foster home. The baby’s mother’s identity was later traced by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, and it was revealed that she was an underage teenage girl from the neighborhood, as per People.

“I did not do it by myself, somebody helped me,” Elysia told CBS Chicago. When asked “who” helped, she replied with all the honesty of a child, “God.”

“If I wasn’t there and God didn’t tell my brain—if my brain didn’t make me go over there, we would find a dead baby in the yard this afternoon,” the little girl said. “It would be much worse and much different.”

Fortunately, “Miracle Jane Doe” survived because of God-fearing Elysia’s alertness.

Instead of abandoning a newborn in this extreme manner, there are safe options available. Under the Safe Haven law implemented in all 50 states in the United States, women may anonymously turn over their babies without fear of prosecution—up to 45 days old in Indiana—to a staff member at a hospital, police department, fire station, or EMS provider. The infant will subsequently be provided medical care and adopted by a family.
