The Gillinder Glass Store and Factory in Port Jervis is holding a sun catcher contest with the theme “American Patriotism.”

Participants must submit a black and white graphic that fits inside a four inch diameter circle that is “timeless (not dated), bold, yet simple (not too detailed),” according to the contest guidelines.

The designs can be done by hand or on a computer and must be submitted by March 20.

Gillinder Glass started holding the contest in 2012, the year of their 100th year anniversary.

“Gillinder Glass enjoys supporting and promoting local artists and contributing to community pride,” it said in a statement. “Young and ‘older’ alike have participated in submitting designs, but it is particularly rewarding to see young people excited about the contest.”

The winner will be invited to the factory to make the first sun catcher of their design and then given one as a gift. Both the winner and the two runners up will get publicity through Gillinder Glass Store’s Facebook page and in press releases. The sun catchers will also be sold in the Gillinder Glass Store.

“Some of our most popular sun catchers have been created by contest winners,” the company said.

The winning designs will be released on or shortly before the Fourth of July.
