The New York Giants have signed left tackle Will Beatty to a five-year deal, according to a report on the team’s website.
“It’s good to be home,” Beatty said, according to the report. “It’s a great feeling.”
Beatty would have been scheduled to become a free agent, had the team not signed him before the March 12 deadline. Beatty seemed set on sticking with the Giants.
“You could be going through free agency, but when that happens a lot of stuff is going through your mind. That feeling is no longer there. You’re settled in with a great team, a team I love playing for. I know the coaching staff. I’m looking forward to getting back in it and moving forward.”
The Giants did well to lock him up.
“We are very pleased to get a new deal done with Will,” general manager Jerry Reese said. “We believe he is one of the ascending left tackles in the NFL.”
Beatty, 27, was the Giants’ second-round selection in 2009, the 60th overall pick. In four seasons, he’s played in 50 games including 31 starts. Last season he missed much of training camp with a sore back. He returned in Week 2 at left tackle and was there all season, after missing roughly half of the previous two seasons with various injuries.
“I thought I improved last year, playing the entire season,” Beatty said. “I want to get back on the field and keep ascending, keep rising. The sky’s the limit for me. I know there is still a lot more out there. I haven’t tapped into all of my potential yet. I’m looking forward to performing and growing each year.”
