Giant floating head found: A crew team in upstate New York found a giant floating Styrofoam head in the Hudson river.
Officials at Marist College in Poughkeepsie say the college crew team was practicing earlier this week when the coach spotted a large object floating near the river’s west bank. He hooked a rope to it and towed it to the team’s dock on the east bank.
The object turned out to be a 7-foot-tall replica of a man’s head made with Styrofoam and fiberglass. The head has the appearance of a Greek or Roman-style statue.
Greg Cannon, spokesman for the college, told the Poughkeepsie Journal that it is unclear where the head came from.
“A lot of people have their theories,” Cannon said. “But we haven’t heard from anyone claiming the head.” He added, “Most people are thinking it is some sort of theater prop.”
Cannon said that after it was recovered, the head is now being held at Marist’s boat house.
Matt Lavin, head coach of the crew team, said that it may have been from a float.
“It’s from a Mardi Gras float and got washed out to sea and to us — I think that’s unlikely. The second and much more plausible [idea] in my opinion is that it came from a theater company up from the North — maybe Red Hook or Rhinebeck, N.Y.,” he told WBUR television.
