Bike Week 2012 takes place from the 16th to the 24th of June this year, with cycling events all over the country organised by local authorities, community groups, charities and cycling groups.

According the Minister for Public and Commuter Transport, Mr Alan Kelly TD, “Bike Week is all about getting people on their bikes, and the organisers have a broad, imaginative and attractive range of events that I hope people of all ages will join in with.”

This year, Waterford was the winning bidder in the competition to play host to the first major event to mark the Week. In 2011, Bike Week got underway in Galway.

Minister Kelly said: “I hope that this year, National Bike Week 2012 will be our biggest and most successful yet.”

According to the bikeweek.ie website, cycling is a fun, healthy, safe, environmentally-friendly and low-cost way to make those shorter journeys. For a taster of what you can expect, here are some of the key events for Bike Week 2012:

• An international conference on cycling in Dublin from the 22nd to the 24th of June;
• A “Maracycle” from Dublin to Belfast and back again, also from the 22nd to the 24th of June;
• A nationwide cycle-to-work-and-school day on Wednesday, 20th June.
