The Florida neighborhood watch volunteer who is accused of shooting and killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin is staying in a safe house in central Florida, according to a statement from his attorney.

George Zimmerman, 28, was released from jail after a judge set his bond at $1 million last week.

“In addition to the $15,000 Mr. Zimmerman paid for his previous bond, $85,000 was paid from the George Zimmerman Legal Defense Fund to reach the 10 percent” required for the bond, according to his attorneys on gzlegalcase.com.

“The legal defense team was able to arrange terms sufficient to satisfy collateral requirements on the balance of the bond,” the post said, adding that Zimmerman thanks the “outpouring of support from supporters.”

His attorneys said that Zimmerman being freed means he will be able to participate in his defense.

He is charged with the second-degree murder of Martin, an unarmed teen, in February, which Zimmerman claims was out of self-defense.
