Piracy tracker TorrentFreak reported that more than 1 million people downloaded the “Game of Thrones” premiere via BitTorrent in less than a day after it aired. At one point, there were more than 160,000 simultaneous peers sharing the episode.
TorrentFreak also said that Australia had the highest piracy rate, while London topped any city. However, the United States accounted the overall most downloads, accounting for nearly 13 percent of all downloads.
“A few hours after the first torrent of the show was uploaded the OpenBitTorrent tracker reported that 163,088 people where sharing one single torrent. 110,303 were sharing a complete copy of that particular torrent while 52,786 were still downloading,” TorrentFreak wrote.
It added: “These are mind boggling numbers that we’ve never seen before.”
The previous record was set with the season premiere of TV show “Heroes” with more than 140,000 peers, the website said.
USA Today reported that the opener for its third season attracted more than 4.4 millions. The high numbers prompted HBO to pick “Game of Thrones” up for a fourth season.
