There are several skins and cases designed to protect the iPod and other electronic devices, but they all have their limitations. While there are some that effectively safeguard gadgets, their bulky appearance detracts from the sleek aesthetic of the product it covers.

InvisibleSHIELD by ZAGG Inc. is unique in that—as the name suggests—it is virtually invisible. But even though you can’t see it, the InvisibleSHIELD still does a superior job at protecting gadgets from scratches and scrapes.

This innovative product works with almost any cell phone, iPod, and other mp3 players. The protective layer is now available for laptops, and iPad’s as well. It consists of a thin, yet extremely resilient polyurethane film designed to completely envelop your device.

Originally developed for military applications, the material was first applied to the leading edge of helicopter blades to protect them from damage. In early 2005, ZAGG first proposed wrapping consumer electronic devices with the clear adhesive film. Later that year, an InvisibleSHIELD film was created for Apple’s iPod nano, and sales exploded. The protective barrier became an overnight success.

Installing a SHIELD is not too difficult. Simply clean the surface you intend to protect, and then spray the solution on the adhesive side of the shield. Place it on your iPod or device, position it correctly, and squeegee out any air bubbles.

The provided solution makes adjustments easy. Plus, ZAGG offers a lifetime replacement guarantee. If the shield ever gets scratched, send it back and the company ships a free replacement.

I purchased my first InvisibleSHIELD for the touch screen portion of my Samsung Moment (larger skins are also available to cover the entire device). Just one day after installing it, there was a huge gouge in my SHIELD. Riding around in my pocket with keys and change, something must have scratched the screen protector, but the phone remained unharmed. If I had not had the SHIELD I would have been extremely upset as I had just bought the phone a few weeks before.

Later, when I bought an iPod touch I immediately purchased a screen protector SHIELD for it. While no one can see it, I feel much safer knowing that it’s protecting my valuable equipment.

I purchased an entire skin for my MacBook Pro. While the installation process is essentially the same, there is more area to cover so the task of applying it was a bit more involved. However, the end result was very good. My MacBook does a lot of traveling and is in and out of my backpack everyday, but the SHIELD helps protect it from scratches and dings. The SHIELD has certainly extended its life.
