Frankie Edgar’s return to a three-round format against Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira during UFC 162 resulted in a victory for the former UFC Lightweight Champion.
Edgar, who previously faced UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo and UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson, won a relatively close but unanimous decision.
While Edgar appeared to be in trouble at times against Oliveira, especially inside the 23-year-old Brazilian’s guard, his relentless pace, footwork, takedowns, and boxing prevailed.
Edgar also showed excellent ground and pound after landing several takedowns.
At the very end of round two, Edgar appeared to pick up Oliveira and slam him to the ground, while Oliveira nearly had Edgar in a guillotine choke.
In round three, Edgar poured it on with crisp boxing, stunning Oliveira.
“It was just as hard as a five-round fight,” Edgar said when asked by commentator Joe Rogan the difference between a three- and five-round fight. “I’m climbing my way back,” he added.
