Frankfort, Illinois: Likely Tornado Reported Near East Chicago

A tornado was spotted on the ground in Frankfort, Ill., earlier on Sunday.

“Tornado ON THE GROUND near Frankfort, moving northeast at 60 mph. Areas in the path of this storm take cover now!” the National Weather Service wrote at around 1 p.m. Frankfort is located southwest of Chicago.

Matt Friedlein of the National Weater Service’s Romeoville office on Sunday told Patch.com that a tornado was reported at 9:30 p.m. around eight miles south of Frankfort.

There were reports that buildings–including church and a warehouse–were damaged.

There were also 75 mph wind gusts registered in Oak Lawn, a suburb or Chicago.

“Mom says sky is BLACK northwest of Frankfort. Be careful Chicago folks,” one local said.

Another local wrote on Twitter that there appeared to be no damage done. 

“It was nasty but no real damage in our immediate area even though tornado touchdown was somewhere in Frankfort,” he said.

However, there were reports of high winds in the area.

Locals reported that there were also power outages in Frankfort.
