PARIS—The growth of the French population, the second most populous country in Europe after Germany, is mainly due to its strong fertility rate, setting it apart from its 27 partners in the European Union.

According to a recent survey from INSEE, the French National Institute of Statistics, France is now 63,185,925 citizens strong, second after Germany and far in front of Italy and the United Kingdom. This figure represents a population growth of 5% over the last seven years, almost double that of the 1990s.

France is one country among many on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coast showing new population tendencies. With an average of 2 children per woman, the birth rate in France is now approaching the same level as the post-WWII “baby boom.”
