NEW YORK—Four officers were shot in Brooklyn late Saturday evening by a suspect who barricaded himself in his apartment along with a woman and a baby. The officers are now recovering in the hospital, according to authorities.

After the woman managed to escape with the 4-month-old baby, officers attempted to enter the apartment, 3301 Nostrand Ave. The suspect opened fire and injured Capt. Al Pizzano, Detective Kenneth Ayala, Detective Mike Keenan and Police Officer Matthew Granahan. Their injuries are not life threatening and the men are in stable condition.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly visited Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn on Sunday morning to visit the officers. The suspect is being treated at Kings County Hospital.

The mayor condemned the number of illegal guns on the street, pointing out that eight NYPD officers have been shot in the last four months.

“We got very lucky tonight, with no life-threatening injuries to officers or innocent bystanders. But sometimes, as you remember, we aren’t so lucky, as we saw with the murder of Police Officer Peter Figoski in December,” said Bloomberg, according to a release. “We will continue to do everything that we can to take illegal weapons off our streets, but until Congress wakes up and finds some courage to stand up to the gun lobby, illegal guns will continue to end up in the hands of dangerous people like tonight’s shooter, who had a small arsenal of illegal guns.”
