iPhone App of the Week: Fotopedia Heritage 2.0.1

December 6, 2010 Updated: September 29, 2015

Fotopedia Heritage is a simple app with unique content. Essentially it is a portable, virtual coffee table photo book with 20,000 beautiful photographs. For those unfamiliar with Fotopedia, it is a website that documents various subject matters through photographs with contributions from the public. It functions similarly to how the Wikipedia website works, but with higher standards of quality control.

These and many other photographs are viewable on the website, but the Fotopedia Heritage app offers a curated collection showing the most professionally captured images, many of which are vivid and stunning.

One important thing to note about this app is that it showcases sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List. These are places that are considered to be of outstanding universal value to humanity and are to be protected for future generations to appreciate.

Fotopedia Heritage makes it easy to find these locations by providing a Google map with pins dropped at each location. It also provides information on particular sites with content from Wikipedia and TripAdvisor should you want to plan a trip to that location.

There is not much more to this app than the features already mentioned, but you may find yourself engrossed in viewing the photographs for minutes at a time, transporting yourself, virtually, to these locations. Fotopedia Heritage is a great resource for travelers, students, historians, and anyone who can appreciate good photography.

One minor thing to note is that the app itself contains no content and requires an Internet connection to display the photos and information about a site.

Fotopedia Heritage is available for free.
