DALLAS—“It was beautiful, it was very impressive,” Ms. Sharon Hashem, former Plano Independent School District (PISD) principal, said of Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Winspear Opera House in Dallas on Jan. 3.

Ms. Hashem, now the president of an independent educational consulting firm, said she was impressed by the soloists singing original pieces in Chinese in the bel canto style. “They had lovely voices,” she said.

The New York-based company was established in 2006 with the mission of reviving 5,000 years of the divinely inspired Chinese culture through traditional art forms like bel canto style singing and classical Chinese dance.

Watching the performance, Ms. Hashem said she felt “peaceful, and just appreciating the beauty, appreciating the culture of China.”

Shen Yun has thus far not been able to perform in China, because since the Cultural Revolution, “Chinese traditional culture has been all but completely demolished,” reads Shen Yun’s mission statement. “However, the deeper spiritual core of the ancient culture, with its values of benevolence, honor, propriety, wisdom, and sincerity, as well as a reverence for the gods and the heavens, cannot be destroyed.”

“I thought it was lovely, costumes were amazing,” Ms. Hashem said of the dances. “They’re amazing, just beautiful. They’re very talented dancers and I thought the choreography was amazing, oh my gosh, just beautiful.”

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has three touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world.  Shen Yun’s International Company will be performing at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre through Jan. 6, and at Fox Theatre from Jan. 8-9. For more information, visit ShenYunPerformingArts.org
