OTTAWA, Canada—After seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts’ sold out show at the National Arts Centre in Canada’s capital, Lise St-Jacques was grateful to have seen the show.
“I want to thank [Shen Yun] for coming to Ottawa,” she said.
Ms. St-Jacques, who is a program officer at a private non-profit organization in Ottawa, said she was very excited to see the show, which reminded her of her younger years when she also did ballet dancing.
“As a young dancer ... I could recognize the talent that this company has,” she said.
“I love it, it’s very beautiful, very delicate and refined dancing,” Ms. St-Jacques said.
Shen Yun Performing Arts was founded in New York in 2006 on a mission to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture. Through its dances, Shen Yun presents scenes from China’s past dynasties.
“We can really feel the story behind the dance and what the artists are trying to portray in the fields of China and in the monasteries of the Buddhist monks,” Ms. St-Jacques said.
“That was very very interesting,” she added.
Shen Yun has grown to comprise three sizable performing groups that tour the world simultaneously, each with its own philharmonic orchestra that includes Chinese instruments leading the melodies.
“It brings to Canada, or to me, the traditions that you have for 5,000 years ... that’s a great gift that you bring to us and hopefully that will stay around forever,” she said.

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has three touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world. Shen Yun’s New York Company will be in Ottawa until Dec. 30 before going on to Montreal, Toronto, and other cities in eastern Canada.
