Former Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik was sentenced to four years in prison on Thursday. Kerik pleaded guilty to eight felony charges in November, including filing false tax returns.

Kerik was the police commissioner under Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s when the 9/11 attacks occurred.

“I know I must be punished,” said Kerik via a Reuters report.

“Please allow me to return to my wife and two little girls as soon as possible to start a new path.”

Kerik, 54, was one of the candidates to head the U.S. Department of Homeland Security back in 2004. During a background check, Kerik withdrew from the potential nomination.
