An old three-story building in Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province, in China, is now in ruins due to repeated demolition. In the face of pressure and attacks by thugs hired by local developers, the Jin family was unable to save their building, which was designated to remain in the family as a private residence and family business for at least 100 years.

Jin Shaotang and Jin Lanying, brother and sister, own the building now.

To make way for property development, local developers hired organized crime thugs to repeatedly attack the family, and forcefully dismantle the building.

Jin Lanying and her sister-in-law Ju Wenzhen locked themselves up in a homemade metal cage to both defend themselves against brutal violence and kidnapping, and be on the premises to protect the building.

Earlier this month, on Dec. 3, the women faced another attack from a hired gang consisting of about 100 individuals. Attackers sprayed the women in their cage with noxious chemicals, and then fled when the women opened a liquefied gas canister for self-defense. Assailants later returned after the women had collapsed from the fumes.

Jin Lanying sustained severe chemical burned from the attack and was sent to the Subei People’s Hospital in Jiangsu for medical treatment. Ju Wenzhen was also badly injured. After Jin was discharged from the hospital, she returned to her cage.

Jin Shaotang was kidnapped on Dec. 19 and his whereabouts are still unknown.
