Forbes Magazine published their list of 2010’s 100 wealthiest billionaires. The list has Mexican businessman Carlos Slim Helu in the number one slot ahead of American billionaires Bill Gates and Warren Buffet.

Helu is continuing to have tremendous success with his telecommunications companies which include Telmex, Telcel, and America Movel.  His estimated worth of $53.5 billion puts him ahead of former Microsoft executive Bill Gates who is now at the number two position with an even $53 billion.

Bill Gates was the richest man in the world for fourteen consecutive years. He has since left Microsoft to focus on philanthropy with his wife Melinda Gates through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Warren Buffet is at number three with a net worth of $47 billion. His worth went up ten billion from last year after successful investments in Goldman Sachs and General Electric. With the global economic decline, Buffet took advantage of low stock prices and turned them into an opportunity for monetary gain.

India’s oil tycoon Mukesh Ambani is at number four with $29 billion and a fellow Indian, steelmaker Lakshmi Mittal rounds out the top five with $28.7 billion. Ambani’s Reliance Indutries is continuing to thrive in India helping him to acquire his ranking while Mittal’s recent pay cut did not stop him from raising his steel company’s stock value over the past year.

The United States has the most number of billionaires, with just over 400 of them. Europe has 250 billionaires, and the Asia Pacific region falls just short of 250. In the Asia-Pacific region, India accounts for 41 billionaires, while China has 60 billionaires.

A complete list of all 100 billionaires is available at Forbes.com.
