CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Michael Brown, a martial artists and trainer who watched Shen Yun Performing Arts perform at the Knight Theater on Jan. 27, said the performance is very elegant, beautiful, and classical.

Based in New York, Shen Yun presents 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture through classical Chinese dance and music

Mr. Brown is a fan of Chinese culture; he has been doing martial arts for more than 50 years, since he was five years old. He said Shen Yun was “overwhelming, almost in the sense that it’s intoxicating.”

He was trying to focus on one or two dancers but found himself blown away by all of the movements and classical music.

The West is used to looking at Chinese actors in film, according to Mr. Brown. He said there is so much more depth in traditional Chinese culture, which he discovered in Shen Yun. He was happy to see it.

Mr. Brown picked up an extra program book to bring back home for his friend.

“It would be a wonderful experience for all the dancers who are performing to be able to see and visit China,” Mr. Brown said. He hopes that Shen Yun will be able to perform in front of the Chinese people in China soon.

Shen Yun cannot currently travel to China.

“Completely independent of the Chinese regime, we enjoy the artistic freedom of New York to bring these ancient legends and virtues back to life,” the company’s website states.

‘There’s a lot of virtue in it’

Shedung Kulaposhnasidum, who works in IT consulting, also saw Shen Yun on Jan. 27.

“Excellent,” Mr. Kulaposhnasidum said of the performance. He was impressed with the choreography of the dances. “Very unique,” he said.
