NEW YORK—This semester, Mercy College in the Bronx will be offering a few new classes to some VIPs (very important parents).

At least one class per week will be offered in the newly opened Parent Center, which aims to arm parents with information to help them become more involved in their children’s education.

Classes include help in teaching math and reading more effectively, as well as managing behavioral problems, and learning to interpret standardized test scores.

“This new program will help empower parents and provide them with the knowledge and the skills to support their children’s educational experience,” Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. said in a statement. “A parent’s active role in the education of their child plays an important role in their child’s academic achievements and success.”

The office of the borough president provided funding for equipment in the Parent Center.

The workshops will also provide additional resources to educators and school leaders. Maria Cruz, a parent coordinator at PS 46 in the Bronx, was on hand at the opening of the Parent Center last Thursday, where she also took a parent leadership class.
