Floyd Mayweather Jr. released a recent video about Manny Pacquiao being named No. 1 contender for his WBC title.
“It’s not just Floyd Mayweather’s bigger than a title,” he said in the video, released by FightHype.com. “Floyd Mayweather at the level now, he can come out with his own world championship belt. ... Everybody’s talking about the title, (Pacquiao’s) the mandatory. He can have the belt! A belt don’t make me.”
He said, “I didn’t need a Nike check on my back…I didn’t a Nike commercial. I didn’t need a Hennessy commercial...My PPV numbers are still the greatest of anyone in the sport,” adding that during the video, he was wearing Reebok pumps. “My guy Isaiah Thomas wear these.”
Mayweather’s fight in September versus Saul “Canelo” Alvarez generated more than 2 million buys and almost got the all-time record.
Meanwhile, Pacquiao’s recent fight against Brandon Rios generated about 500,000 buys.
The WBC has said that Mayweather is in a voluntary defense stage for that title. He got the belt from Victor Ortiz two years ago.
It is unclear who Mayweather or Pacquiao will fight next, but there’s been a bevy or reports in recent weeks saying British fighter Amir Khan will face Mayweather in May.
“It’s the fight I’ve always been after and we’re very close now, not too far away,” Khan told The Guardian. “Hopefully something is going to be announced within the next couple of weeks.”
