A 23-year-old Florida woman accused of shoplifting falsely accused a Palm County Sheriff’s Office deputy of rape, officials said Nov. 9.

Marley Barberian is now facing charges of a false report, perjury, and false report of a crime, CBS12 reported. She was in a county jail after being arrested at a Target for alleged shoplifting. She later told a nurse that the deputy sexually assaulted her while taking her to jail.

When a detective responded to the case, Barberian issued a sworn statement about the sexual assault on the side of a road, adding that the deputy also groped her during a patdown at the Target.

She described the deputy who patted her down as a white male, bald, and had green eyes.

But investigators found that a female deputy had patted her down, CBS2 reported.

Meanwhile, detectives found that the accused deputy only drove her to the Greenacres police station, while the female deputy drove her to the Palm Beach County jail. The woman claimed the male deputy raped her after leaving the Greenacres police department for the Palm Beach County jail.

There were also no stops from the time the accused deputy drove Barberian from the store to the Greenacres station. And video footage shows the female deputy escorting her to the jail.

Barberian was later arrested and was charged with making a false rape accusation. Other details about the incident aren’t clear.
