Northern Territory outback communities have been warned of possible flooding, damaging winds and heavy rain from remnants of ex-cyclone Ilsa.

A severe weather warning is in place for residents in southern parts of the territory as the risk of further damage persists.

Ilsa damaged properties in Western Australia’s (WA) northwest after crossing the coast overnight on Thursday as a category four cyclone before weakening as the weather system moved inland.

The Bureau of Meteorology said while no tropical low systems were active there was still a chance of flooding.

The warnings come as WA authorities begin to assess damage in several remote communities.

Federal and state governments have also made emergency payments available to residents affected by destructive winds and heavy rainfall.

“This cyclone has impacted on many extremely remote communities and ... it may take some time to fully understand the full extent of the impact,” Acting Emergency Management Minister Andrew Giles said in a joint statement with WA counterpart Sue Ellery.

Crews are surveying damage in remote parts of WA with homesteads and station properties in the northwest hit particularly hard.
