For the first time in the U.S., undergraduate students can major in social media. Undergraduates attending Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina, can select Social Media as a major beginning in the fall of 2013.

Dr. Maurice Scherrens, President of Newberry College, stated in press release that the College is looking to the future demand by offering the program.

“It is an exciting new program where there is a projected short and long term demand for college graduates since the field is expanding so rapidly,” stated Scherrens.

The interdisciplinary program will be run through the Department of Arts and Communications, and will include existing courses in Graphic Design, Communications, Business Administration, Psychology, and Statistics. Another four Social Media courses will be added to the curriculum.

Newberry has its accreditation through the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It is a small liberal arts college that was founded in 1856 by the Lutheran Church. It was ranked #47 by U.S. News and World Report on the list of Best Colleges in the South.

In a similar vein, New England College will be offering an online MBA in Digital and Social Media beginning in January, 2013.
