BURBANK, Calif.—It’s time for the 2011 Fiesta of the Spanish Horse in Burbank! The Fiesta is in its 12th year of raising funds for cancer research. The event lasts for five days, May 4-8, and is again at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. Music, horses, and culture to benefit others—a great mix!

The Fiesta’s mission statement includes: “To help find a cure for cancer by raising awareness and much needed funds for cancer research, all with the assistance of our Horse Owners and Exhibitors.

“Fiesta of the Horse, a Multi-Breed Charity Horse Show and Spectacular, provides an entertaining and educational forum in which to celebrate the heritage of Spanish Horses and their role in California’s History while assisting in the ongoing fight against cancer.”

With a lifetime of loving animals and the heart to help others, Joanne Asman naturally became involved in producing fundraisers for charities. She began working with fundraisers in the early 1980s.

She has previously fundraised for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, as well as for various animal rescue projects, and she found horses were always part of the attraction for those attending the events.

Asman explained, “This is an event that joins cultures and horses that are steeped in history.”

Why the Spanish horses? There are several breeds with a history of bravery, like the Andalusians and Lusitanos, which were “war” horses. They are still ridden in bullfighting rings and are talented athletes in any equestrian sport. Paso Finos, another horse of Spanish heritage, is famous for its smooth ride—so smooth, you can hold a glass of water and not spill a drop while riding one.

Asman shared, “In 1995 I had a bad horse injury. As I was recuperating, a horse I had wanted to buy came up for sale. I thought if he was a smooth ride I might get him. That’s how I became involved with Andalusians. I bought Tuno IV—he has been my best friend ever since.”

As for Tuno IV, aka “Traveler” now, he has been a busy fellow, too! He has a resume that would make other horses drool: he was an extra in the Janet Jackson music video, “Someone to Call My Lover;” “KCET Life and Times Today: A Road to El Dorado” (animated Dreamworks feature film); “The Arthel & Fred Show,” ridden by actress Stefanie Powers; and he appeared in “The Jamie Fox Show.” The stunning Andalusian has also graced the cover of Vogue Magazine (June 2005), as well as many other magazines, just to name a few of his gigs.

Now he is known as “Traveler”. He filled the horseshoes of the former mascot for the University of Southern California when he retired.

Celebrities who have come to support the event in the past include Erik Estrada, Anjelica Huston,
Martha Coolidge, Stefanie Powers, Leslie Charleson, Luke Perry, Kathy Vara, and stuntman Tad Griffith.

Festivities will include vendors, raffles, multi-breed riding competitions and exhibitions, singers and dancers, trick-roping and riding, as well as a Spectacular. The Spectacular is the special Saturday evening event that features “an entertaining and educational multi-cultural ‘Broadway Style’ spectacular that celebrates the heritage and historical impact of the Spanish Horse on all horses today.”
