NEW YORK—Nicole Paultre Bell, the fiancée of slain man, Sean Bell, announced Wednesday that she is running for a seat on New York City Council. Her fiancé was killed in a hail of gunfire by NYPD in November 2006, which sparked a national controversy.

“This is what life threw my way,” she told the New York Daily News. “It made me realize that there are serious problems out there.”

Nicole Paultre Bell, 26, is looking to run for the seat left by former Council Member Thomas White, who died about a week ago and represented Jamaica, Queens. After White died, a special election was announced, which is to be held on Nov. 2. Bell will have to move from her Far Rockaway, Queens, residence, where she currently lives with her father and two children.
