An article saying a female softball player is “coming out as heterosexual” is satire.

The report was published on the Daily Currant, a satire website similar to The Onion.

“A college softball player from the University of Texas shocked the sports world today by coming out as a heterosexual,” reads the article, which has thousands of “likes” and shares on Facebook. It continues with a fake quote that reads: “‘I would just like to thank everyone who has supported me through this difficult time in my life,’ she told reporters at McCombs Field in Austin. ‘For years I have known that I was different, but lacked the courage to be open about my lifestyle with family, friends and teammates.’”

According to a disclaimer, The Daily Currant doesn’t publish real news.

“The Daily Currant is an English language online satirical newspaper that covers global politics, business, technology, entertainment, science, health and media. It is accessible from over 190 countries worldwide - now including South Sudan,” the disclaimer says.

It adds, “Our mission is to ridicule the timid ignorance which obstructs our progress, and promote intelligence - which presses forward.” The website then says “no” as to whether its news stories are real.

“Our stories are purely fictional. However they are meant to address real-world issues through satire and often refer and link to real events happening in the world,” it continues.
