School administrators in North Dakota are looking into an incident involving three fans wearing Ku Klux Klan-type white robes and hoods at a state hockey playoff game.

A photo of the hood-wearing fans from Friday’s game was posted on Twitter by University of North Dakota student Shane Schuster, who was sitting with friends at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks. He noticed that fans in the Red River High School student section were wearing the strange garb.

“I thought, ‘Are those KKK hoods?’ I couldn’t believe it,” he told The Associated Press. “I was shocked.”

Supporters of Red River High School usually take part in a traditional “white out” to support their team, reported the Grand Forks Herald.

“We, as a school, are extremely disappointed with the behavior of these three students,” Grand Forks Red River High School Principal Kris Arason said in a statement, according to the Herald. “This behavior is not a representation of our school or student body.”

Mark Rerick, the athletics director for Grand Forks Public Schools, said on Saturday that officials “notified the administrators at Red River High School who immediately began their investigation,” reported AP.

“To the best of my knowledge, the students have been identified by the Red River administrators who are continuing their investigation,” he continued.

Students with Red River where shocked that students wore the hoods and robes.

“They put them on for about 30 seconds,” Red River senior Barret Eickhof told the Herald. “Nobody did anything at first, but then after everyone saw it, we all told them to take it off.”

Junior Alyssa Carlson said she was “very ashamed” that they wore the robes. “Three guys ruined it for everybody,” she added.

The photo was retweeted numerous times, with many Twitter users similarly expressing their outrage.
