After playing Superman in several recent films and co-starring in the blockbuster “Mission Impossible 6,” British actor Henry Cavill has announced his new role as the lead in Netflix’s drama “The Witcher,” as a monster slayer named Geralt.

In “The Witcher,” Cavill will be going on a journey with a sorceress and a princess with a dangerous secret in a story about fate and family, created by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Netflix has decided to make Lauren Schmidt Hissrich of Netflix’s “Daredevil,” “The Defenders” and “Umbrella Academy” as the executive producer and showrunner, along with Alik Sakharov from “House of Cards” and “Game of Thrones” for four episodes and the pilot, reported THR.

Regarding her choice of Henry Cavill, Hissrich wrote in a tweet, “He was my first meeting. I didn’t have writers or scripts yet – just a green light and a lot of passion. That was four months ago, and I’ve never forgotten the passion he brought. He IS Geralt. He always has been. I’m so thrilled to welcome HENRY CAVILL to the family.”

While Netflix cheered over the choice of Cavill, fans of “The Witcher” had varying opinions.

Twitter user Ray Gnagey replied to Hissrich’s tweet, saying “Based on how highly he speaks of the books and the games, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing him play Geralt!”

But another user NuttiKrust had different expectation, writing, “You have got to be joking... Mads Mikkelsen, definitely.. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, maybe .. but Henry Cavill? Urgh. No thanks. Pass.”

Hissrich replied to his comment, saying, “You had a hope, it didn’t happen, and you were still respectful to the show and other commenters. Big props. I hope we'll convince you yet.” In response, NuttiKrust said he’s open to being convinced.

The Witcher story has been previously adapted into television series, video games and graphic novels in Poland, reported THR.
