A family Christmas portrait posted by a photographer has caused an uproar because of how the mother and daughters are posing in it.
The Johnson family is posing between two lines of trees in the photo, with the only boy in the back smiling and putting his thumb up. The dad is crouching next to him with a small board on which is written: “Peace on Earth.”
In the front row, the mother and daughters all have their mouths taped shut with green tape and their hands bound with Christmas lights.
While some people supported the humor the photo is attempting, many people found the picture offensive.
“I am horrified as a woman you could be so ignorant that you would find this funny,” said one Facebook user.
“This is absolutely disgusting and in no way funny!” added another.
But the photographer who took the portrait and posted it, Hannah Hawkes, responded by saying people were making a big deal out of nothing.
“I have been called every name in the book, and have received some very hateful and vulgar comments and messages. I would like to say that as a female I do NOT and have never promoted violence to women! I do not support abuse, or the degradation of women,” she said.
“My controversial photo was taken by request by the family, and was in no way meant to promote abuse. This photo was taken with humor in mind, and was meant as a comical Christmas photo.
“I personally know this family, and have known them for many years. They are not abusive to their children in any shape or form. Also, I would like to add that no one was harmed during the process!”
Some people agreed with her, with one saying: “This is good clean humor taken differently by some,” said one.
Hawkes also posted several other pictures of the family.
In them, no tape is seen.
