Online social-networking giant Facebook Inc. will likely put off its initial public offering (IPO) until 2012, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, to buy more time for the website to mature as a viable business. Being a publicly listed company on a U.S. exchange brings additional disclosures and financial scrutiny from investors and federal regulators.

Experts say that waiting until later to announce an IPO lets Zuckerberg, 26, to have more time to develop skills needed to lead a public company subject to quarterly financial filings and questioning from Wall Street analysts.
