There’s a rumor circulating this week that says Facebook will shut down March 15, 2014, but that’s a different variation old hoax.

Every few weeks, there’s a new rumor saying that Facebook will shut down. There was one in March 2011 and March 2012. A few months later, the message said that it would shut down July 15, 2012.

“Facebook is supposed to be closing down March 15th because it is becoming very overpopulated. There have been many members complaining that Facebook is becoming very slow. Records show that there are many active Facebook members and also many new members,” reads the message claiming that it will shut down March 15, according to WafflesatNoon, which republished the message.

“We will be sending this message around to see if members are active or not. If you are active please send to 15 other users using copy+paste to show that you are still active. Those who do not send this message within 2 weeks will be deleted without hesitation to make more space. Send this message to all of your friends to show that you are still active and you will not be deleted.”

The message then says it’s from the “Founder of Facebook.”

Facebook has not made any official announcement that it will shut down, be closed for several days due to “maintenance,” or anything else.

According to hoax-debunking website Snopes.com, there was a hoax message saying Facebook will close May 15, 2013.

There was another rumor going around saying Facebook would shut down February 29, 30, 31 for “maintenance.” February only has 28 days this year.
