The face lift is the most well-known and oldest of the cosmetic procedures. Indeed, believe it or not, there were people performing face lifts even as far back as 1901, and to this day, they still remain extremely popular amongst people looking to rewind time and give their face a new lease of life.
Just What is a Face Lift Exactly?
A face lift, unlike other facial rejuvenation treatments, such as Botox, is a surgical procedure and is conducted in an operating clinic or plastic surgeons location. There are many different types of face lift, from the mini face lift (sometimes called the ‘S’ lift, and the most minimally invasive) to the more dramatic composite and deep plane face lifts; and which one you’ll have depends very much on what results you require.
Why a Face Lift?
Traditionally, a face lift counteracts the effects of aging on the face. Particular aspects of aging that the face lift can dramatically improve include:
Sagging skin that has lost its natural elasticity.
Damaged skin tissue from over-exposure to sun.
Skin damaged by long term drinking or smoking.
It’s unlikely that you’ll have a procedure that corrects the entire face. Instead, it’s probable that you’ll have a face lift that targets specific problem areas; which are often the jaw-line, around the mouth and nose and around the eyes.
What Results Can You Expect?
Results differ, depending on the extent of the loose or damaged skin. However, in most cases, the results are impressive. As a general rule, with a face lift, you can expect to look visibly younger, certainly to a degree that would be noticeable.
Thanks to notoriously bad examples of face lift surgery amongst certain celebrities (particularly in the 90s!) face lifts do have something of a reputation. However, the surgery has developed significantly since then. In the 21st century, SMAS and deep plane techniques focus as much on creating a fuller, healthier look as they do on pulling those wrinkles back and tightening loose skin!
The Advantages and Disadvantages of Having a Face Lift
One of the most significant advantages is undoubtedly the dramatic results that you can expect to enjoy. Unlike other non-invasive techniques, such as injectable fillers, a face lift will provide you with a result that is noticeably impressive, and will literally take years off your appearance.
It is more expensive than other procedures, but this is because it is permanent, which actually makes it a great investment. Obviously, a face lift will not stop the natural aging process, and you may have to return to your doctor to get things tightened up again, but there’s no doubt that your face lift will last for many years before this happens.
The confidence that comes with looking good is, of course, another big advantage. It’s also a benefit that cannot really be given a price tag; after all, who wouldn’t want to feel great about their physical appearance?
The main disadvantage comes with the risk of the surgery going wrong. As with any form of surgery, there is always a risk, and your cosmetic surgeon will go through these with you before you book the procedure. However, if your doctor is a reputable one with an excellent history of providing face lifts, then there is no reason why you should experience any complications.
