SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Shen Yun Performing Arts graced the Sacramento Community Center Theater stage in a stopover performance that ends tomorrow with a 2 p.m. matinee, Thursday, Jan. 3.
Fred Shepherd, executive director of Global Information Services, which deals with Middle East issues as they affect the world, found that overall, the world’s premier of classical Chinese dance and music, was “overwhelming.”
“It was all somewhat emotional in that sense,” Mr. Shepherd said. “The dancing was superb. They were well-rehearsed; they carried that off perfectly.”
Based in New York, the company website describes Shen Yun as “a presentation of traditional Chinese culture as it once was: a study in grace, wisdom, and the virtues distilled from the five millennia of Chinese civilization.”
Mr. Shepherd, who says he is familiar with Chinese culture, would “without question” recommend Shen Yun to his friends.
“It’s a spectacular show; colorful, happy, uplifting, and they should see it at least once. Yes, there’s no question. It’s superb.”
Shen Yun takes audiences through a series of mini dramas adapted from legends and myths, through to China today, the website explains.
Tenors, sopranos, and other award-winning vocalists perform piano-accompanied solos, along with a regular favorite—the stirring melodies of the two-stringed erhu, also known as the Chinese violin.
Shen Yun’s one-of-a-kind orchestra, with its all-original compositions, blends East and West like no other. Adding intrigue, projected behind the dancers, hi-tech images lift the stage and set it amidst blossoming landscapes, deep forests, Mongolian prairies, or celestial paradises.
“It’s outstanding. Outstanding performance,” Mr. Shepherd said.
